Gold in the mile – part retrofit and part new building the Britannia Public House within Southend’s Golden Mile is a locally listed building and heritage asset which has been practically rebuilt and remodelled to create a new Commercial unit with 3 maisonettes, 6 apartments and raised level shared amenity.
The Britannia Public House was a dilapidated building situated along Southend Seafront at the east end of the Golden Mile. The project comprises of two main elements, the first was to retain and remodel the existing heritage asset into a restaurant at ground floor, with 3 maisonettes above, with the second phase to the rear of the site included a block of 6 new apartments, shared amenity space and vehicle parking.
The original dilapidated public house required specialised facade retention throughout construction in order to keep the original structure and fabric on an incredibly tight urban site with little in the way of areafor construction, handling storage and facilities.
The application of gold shingles creates a unique piece of architecture situated along the Golden Mile of the seafront linked with attractions and amusement arcades. Internally each unit harnesses the setting of the estuary with views from both within the living spaces and externally from the covered terraced balconies.
